The Epidemiology Data Center (EDC) was established in 1980 as a section of the Department of Epidemiology in the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) and is recognized as an official University Center at the University of Pittsburgh. It was founded by Katherine M. Detre, M.D., Dr.P.H., and is under the co-direction of Sheryl F. Kelsey, Ph.D., Steven H. Belle, Ph.D. and Stephen R. Wisniewski, Ph.D. The EDC executive committee also includes Drs. Kim Sutton-Tyrrell and Maria Brooks, Ms. Kim Beringer, Ms. Sharon Lawlor and Mr. Jeffrey Martin. The EDC has collaborated in over 100 research studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. Presently the EDC coordinates data management and analysis activities for 26 research projects sponsored by federal agencies as well as industry. The current studies represent a variety of scientific designs including clinical trials, registries, and case control studies. The successful coordination of our research requires that we facilitate global communication and participation of institutions worldwide.

The EDC is headquartered on the first and ground floors of the Graduate School of Public Health encompassing more than 12,000 square feet. Within the EDC office space, a large central area is used for staff meetings, training sessions, external project meetings, conferences, and special projects. The EDC also has a reception area, several private conference rooms, a supply room, a computer/server assembly room, a kitchen and a raised-floor computer room, which houses more than 60 servers and a Hewlett-Packard VAX 6610 minicomputer. The servers provide a variety of functions including file, web, e-mail, database, portal, faxing, fax/scanning and backup services.

The EDC employs 21 faculty, 70 full-time staff and 23 part-time and student employees. A variety of academic backgrounds and fields of expertise are represented including physicians, biostatisticians, applied mathematical statisticians, epidemiologists, nurses, systems analysts, programmers, data managers, data entry personnel, and administrative personnel.

Most of the faculty and staff are involved in more than one research project. This varied workload promotes a healthy interaction among the projects, and allows for the interchange of the staff ensuring adequate, qualified support for individual projects during periods of peak activity. It also facilitates smooth transitions during periods of staff turnover.

One of the main focuses of the EDC since its founding has been developing and refining standard information technology, data management and statistical procedures and models. Such procedures and models enable reduced and efficient start-up time on new projects, and promote a high degree of quality control for developed research.
