What is hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. A virus is a type of "germ" that is much smaller than a cell. Viruses copy themselves in cells, and this causes the disease.

Find out if we can predict response to treatment, especially in African American patients

Some patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are more likely than others to respond to treatment. Patients who usually respond better have some things in common:
  • They do not have HCV genotype 1
  • They have less HCV in their body
  • They are younger
  • The amount of HCV in their bodies drops very quickly after treatment begins
These features were identified in other studies of HCV treatment. However, very few African Americans were in these studies, so it is not known for sure if these features help doctors to know which African American patients will respond to treatment. The VIRAHEP-C study will have enough African American patients undergoing the same treatment to find out if we can predict which African Americans will respond to treatment.
