Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. A virus is a type of "germ" that is much smaller than a cell. Viruses copy themselves in cells, and this causes the disease.

What is VIRAHEP-C?
The study of Viral Resistance to Antiviral Therapy of Chronic Hepatitis C or VIRAHEP-C will investigate the best available medication for treating hepatitis C to see how well these medications work in African Americans and Caucasian Americans. It will also study the reasons why treatment for hepatitis C works for some patients, but not for others. 400 patients with chronic hepatitis C will be recruited from 8 medical centers across the United States between September, 2002 and August, 2003. Patients will be treated with the best existing therapy for chronic hepatitis C, a combination of pegylated interferon (peginterferon) and ribavirin for one year. Patients will then be followed for another year after treatment and the study will be completed in 2006. This study is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health.
